REACH
The Pre-registration phase of REACH is now ended and the strategy work and actual pre-registration of the substances manufactured or imported from outside EU is concluded for the Höganäs Europe operations.
Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals
The European Regulation on Chemicals Management, REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals), was adopted at the end of 2006 and came into force on 1 June 2007. REACH was introduced principally to provide better information throughout the whole supply chain about the effects of substances, and thereby improve protection to human health and the environment from chemical-related risks.
REACH imposes new duties on each organisation in the supply chain. In practice this means that all substances that are manufactured or imported into the EU in quantities greater than 1mt per annum will need to be registered.
This involves development of a strategy and action plan for registration and the creation of a portfolio of substances; thereby ensuring our raw material supplies and manufactured products meet the Regulatory requirements.

Reach in brief |
| Manufacturers and importers must register all substances manufactured in or imported into the EU in quantities of one mt per year or more per legal entity. |
| Registration mainly involves presenting a hazard data set and risk assessment of downstream uses for each substance. |
|
Following pre-registration, Registration is phased-in over the following periods:
>1,000 tpa: to December 2010 >100 <1,000 tpa: to June 2013 >1<100 tpa: to June 2018 |
| The Regulation applies to substances either on their own or in preparations such as in an alloy. |
| European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), based in Helsinki, will manage all the technical, scientific and administrative aspects of the registration system. www.echa.eu |
