Somaloy® motor (in front) compared with laminated counterpart

Smaller and lighter ABS oil pump motors.

In the automotive sector, the trend towards smaller and lighter motors involves a constant balance between lower fuel consumption and consumer demand for more options. Aisin Seiki in Japan, produces a highly compact design. The Somaloy®- based motor offers comparable performance, but is 36% shorter and weighs 17% less. Somaloy® technology with its intrinsic freedom to apply 3D design, has been utilized in the following ways to create a more compact motor:

  • An increase in the area facing the magnet has been gained, leading to an 8% improvement in the magnetic flux.
  • The copper wire can be wound more efficiently, reducing the length required.

  • By eliminating sharp edges, the copper winding can be made tighter.

  • The commutator, which controls power to the copper winding, has been integrated into the design.

Modular assembly

The motor has individual pre-wound teeth with a built-in mounting feature for assembly. This design utilizes some important Somaloy® features. The 3D flux capability and rounded, smooth finish ensure windings with a high packing factor and good thermal conductivity.

  Ease of manufacturing

This free piston cooler is produced by the Twinbird
Corporation of Japan. The linear motor drive contains
two Somaloy® stator parts. As a result, the
assembly is easier and cheaper to manufacture compared
to the laminated predecessor.

                                                                                   Axial Flow Motor

The right material in the right place

The axial flow motor combines both Somaloy® and laminated steel in one and the same motor. The Somaloy® teeth provide a smooth rounded finish for winding with a high packing factor.
The compacting technology for 3D flux
and built-in skew is utilized. The laminated
steel stack carries the 2D flux in the back
iron and also acts as an assembly feature for the teeth.

Somaloy® is not confined to motor applications

The Bosch common rail system utilizes the complex
shaping ability of Somaloy® for this actuator. Somaloy®
pot cores compacted to high densities enable high
force and precise fast valve actuation.
