The Use of a Newly Developed Machinability Enhancer for Improving the Machinability of Fe-Cu-C Components
The Fe-Cu-C material system is the workhorse material system for the powder metal (PM) industry. This alloy meets the strength and hardness requirements of a number of applications. The machinability of this material system can be challenging due to the pearlitic structure generated. To improve the machinability, MnS is often added. While the machinability is improved, the components become more susceptible to corrosion. Today, an increasing number of applications require good corrosion resistance and improved machinability. This paper shows the effect of a newly developed machinability enhancer, SM3, on machinability and corrosion resistance in a FC-0208 material.
