2011 has been a very busy year for our PoP Centre. We have run several compaction improvement campaigns together with customers and also held a number of application engineering seminars together with OEMs and customers from all over the world. We have invested in new comprehensive PM brazing services, and installed a state-of-the-art helical gear box compaction system as well as a new FZG gear test rig that will help to provide valuable data for design of PM gears.

Other highlights include reaching 100,000 km with the Smart car gearbox and converting from Hiped to sintered gear pairs in the Power of Powder rally team car.

On the material side, we have successfully introduced our highly efficient lubricant system Intralube® E and our new machining enhancing additives. We also have a lot of conversion activities going on in the market for a couple of new products and a new material solution for assembled camshafts is currently being evaluated in an OEM engine.

We are already looking forward to next year’s activities but before that we will close the year by participating in the gear conference CTI Symposium in Berlin. Hope to see you there!

Distaloy® AQ honoured with Award of Merit

Robert Frykholm receives the EPMA Award of Merit

During the opening session of World PM 2010 in Florence on Monday, October 11, it was announced that Höganäs had been honoured with the EPMA Award of Merit in the materials category. The winner was Distaloy AQ, a cost-efficient lean alloy specially designed to have excellent machinability and sizing properties in sintered state and high strength after heat treatment.

The decision to award the new material was based on a number of criteria. One criterion was the contribution to the increased competitiveness of the PM industry. The low amount of alloying elements (0.5% Ni and 0.5% Mo) makes Distaloy AQ more cost-efficient and it reduces the risk of price-cost squeeze due to high alloy cost fluctuations. Moreover, it enables higher densities by improving compressibility and as Höganäs’ other Distaloy powders, it has a very high product robustness in turn reducing its tendency to dimensional change during processing.

The development of Distaloy AQ is a good example of how customers’ needs were translated into improved PM solutions that benefit component manufacturers as well as OEMs in turn improving the competitiveness of PM versus competing manufacturing technologies.
