2011 has been a very busy year for our PoP Centre. We have run several compaction improvement campaigns together with customers and also held a number of  application engineering seminars together with OEMs and customers from all over the world. We have invested in new comprehensive PM brazing services, and installed a state-of-the-art helical gear box compaction system as well as a new FZG gear test rig that will help to provide valuable data for design of PM gears.

Other highlights include reaching 100,000 km with the Smart car gearbox and converting from Hiped to sintered gear pairs in the Power of Powder rally team car.

On the material side, we have successfully introduced our highly efficient lubricant system Intralube® E and our new machining enhancing additives. We also have a lot of conversion activities going on in the market for a couple of new products and a new material solution for assembled camshafts is currently being evaluated in an OEM engine.

We are already looking forward to next year’s activities but before that we will close the year by participating in the gear conference CTI Symposium in Berlin. Hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

Eckart Schneider

Partners reveal innovative EV axle

EV axle

As a result of a true team effort, a functional model of an innovative transmission concept for electric vehicles with improved NVH and efficiency performance was presented at the International CTI Symposium and Exhibition in Berlin.

The transmission, featuring powder metallurgy (PM) gears, was on display at the 10th CTI international transmission symposium and exhibition. Two companies had teamed up with Höganäs to prototype the new solution - Vicura AB, one of the world’s leading transmission design houses, as well as specialist gear manufacturer SwePart AB. The result is an innovative transmission that offers lower manufacturing costs, lower weight and less noise – typical demands by manufacturers of electric vehicles.

"The key criteria have been lower noise levels - because you don't have masking noise from a combustion engine - and low costs, because a low-volume product like electric cars require cost-efficient solutions. This transmission fulfils both criteria," says Magnus Wall, Sales Director at Vicura.

Anders Flodin, Manager Gear Technology at Höganäs, says: "We have proved the PM gear concept on a more experimental scale and now we have one of the world's top gear design experts at one of the top design houses taking this forward to the market. Vicura and its customers will reap the benefits in terms of lower costs, lighter weight, less noise and improved fuel economy."

SwePart has contributed with its expertise of gear design and gear making. Engineering Manager Hans Hansson says: "Our three companies are the first to make PM gears for this application, and this will enable us to build up unique knowledge and therefore put us in a strong position for entering new markets."
