Powder Manufacturing

Höganäs powder products for the component manufacturing industry originate from a long tradition of metal production, bulk (powder) material handling and development of new processes and materials. Metal powders are manufactured by two main methods:

Reduction
Iron ore is reduced to pure iron by a special reduction process called the ”Höganäs process” creating a porous iron – sponge iron. 

Atomization
Molten metal is flowing through a nozzle and is subjected to a high velocity fluid flow, either water or gas. The molten metal droplets solidify to powder particles. 

Water atomization produces irregular particles, fit for compaction for PM and filter applications. Gas atomisation produces spherical powder particles resulting in good flow and suitable for applications such as surface coating or brazing.

Screening
The powders are subjected to various sieve steps to obtain a sieve cut required for the application.
