Tungsten carbide, chromium carbide and titanium carbide all belong to the family of carbide powders. They are extremely hard refractory ceramic materials.

Carbide powders are a range of hard materials with metallic properties and used for a wide range of applications. The carbide powders are often based on metals such as tungsten, chromium, titanium, vanadium, molybdenum or zirconium. Thanks to their excellent hardness, carbide powders are used for heavy industrial use such as hard metal-cutting tools, wear parts, mining and road construction tools. For instance, titanium carbide and tungsten carbide are used to coat metals in cutting tools. The main benefit with tungsten carbide is its extreme hardness. It is double the density of steel and approximately twice as stiff.
