Material Aspects of Selectively Densified Transmission Gears

PM2000, in Kyoto, Japan. Authors: Sven Bengtsson, Senad Dizdar, Martin Svensson. In order to increase the fatigue properties in the flank and the tooth root regions of PM gears a selective densification can be performed. Previous investigations have shown a substantial improvement of gear performance by utilising this technology and commercial production has been established. This paper describes the relation between material properties and densification as well as some results with powders of different types and alloying systems. The feasibility and influence on quality of the processing steps were also considered and the fatigue life of gears was discussed.
